Unity Homes at Ballston, an eight-story, 144-unit affordable housing project located in the heart of Ballston, has been honored with the prestigious NAIOP Northern Virginia Award of Excellence in the Mixed-Use Project category.
Submitted by DCS Design, the project is a shining example of faith-based affordable housing partnerships, brought to life with the collaboration of DAVIS Construction, LandDesign, ECS MidAtlantic, and Bohler DC.
The former Central United Methodist Church building has been transformed into Unity Homes through a collaborative effort with the Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing (APAH) and the church itself. The development provides crucial affordable housing, featuring 144 apartments targeted at residents who earn between 30% and 60% of the area median income (AMI). The property includes 108 one-bedroom, 24 two-bedroom, and 12 three-bedroom apartments, with 15 units designated for households at or below 30% AMI.
Located at 4201 Fairfax Drive, Unity Homes also features 5,000 square feet of amenity space, including an outdoor courtyard, community flex spaces, and a daycare center with capacity for 90 children. A full-time coordinator will provide onsite programming and connect residents with local resources.
The NAIOP Northern Virginia Awards Ceremony, held on November 21, 2024, at Capital One Hall in Tysons, celebrated 33 projects that have made significant contributions to the region's built environment. Unity Homes was recognized for its innovative approach to addressing affordable housing needs while fostering a sense of community.
